The Armory’s 55,000-square-foot drill hall, inspired by the original Grand Central Depot and Europe’s grand train sheds, remains one of New York’s largest unobstructed spaces. A masterpiece of its time, it was designed by Charles W. Clinton, a Regiment veteran and architect who later co-founded Clinton & Russell, the firm behind iconic structures like the Apthorp Apartments and the now-demolished Astor Hotel.
